Eintracht Frankfurt defied the odds, overcoming Bayern to win their first major title since the 1988 German Cup and qualify for next season’s Europa League.
With Sven Ulreich up for a corner kick, Mijat Gacinovic goes the length of the field and seals a 3-1 win for Eintracht over Bayern.
Sassuolo have confirmed the signing of Kevin-Prince Boateng from Eintracht Frankfurt.
The Ghana international, who has had two previous spells in Serie A with AC Milan, returns to Italy after just one season in the Bundesliga with the Eagles.
Boateng returns to Italy also to be closer to his partner Melissa Satta, a well-known Italian television celebrity, having expressed a desire to settle in Italy.
“I agreed with Prince when we signed him that we would never stand in his way if he wanted to leave,” said Frankfurt’s sporting director Fredi Bobic on the Bundesliga club’s website. “He expressed that wish now because he would like to be playing where he sees himself settling to live, which is why I have obviously kept my word.
“We have a lot to thank Prince for. He was an outstanding leader, both in human terms and sportingly, and we wish him and his family all the best for the future. Kevin-Prince Boateng leaves Eintract and the Bundesliga as a winner.”
Boateng said that he will have good memories of his time at Frankfurt.
“With victory in the Cup, my career in Germany has gone full circle and I am leaving Eintracht with a positive feeling,” he said. “It was an excellent year for me and I will never forget my time in Frankfurt.
“I’d like to thank my teammates, the coaching team, the team behind the secnes and the sporting management, above all Fredi Bobic, and of course the fans for their great support.”
He scored six goals in 31 games for the Bundesliga club last season, helping the also to victory in the DFB Pokal with an assist in the 3-1 final victory over Bayern Munich — a win which secured their place in the Europa League next season.
He spent the 2016-17 season at Las Palmas, with whom he scored 10 goals in 28 La Liga outings, having been largely used as a substitute by Milan in the 2015-16 season.
His signing for Sassuolo comes a day after they signed Federico Di Francesco — the son of their former coach Eusebio Di Francesco, who is now in charge at Roma — from Bologna, with Diego Falcinelli heading in the opposite direction.
