Newcastle and Southampton make approach to recruit Ligue 1 star

Newcastle United and Southampton have reportedly stepped up their interest in signing Christopher Jullien from Toulouse this summer.

According to claims from Yahoo Sport France, as cited in a report from GFFN, the Magpies have been in contact with the entourage of Jullien as they look to recruit the player.

The central defender enjoyed a good season at Toulouse despite his side’s shortcomings, and it’s believed that he’d be keen to secure a move to the Premier League ahead of next season.

Jullien, 25, is a physically imposing central defender who developed a strong partnership with Issa Diop at the back for Toulouse. Diop has since joined West Ham in a club-record deal.

It seems the acquisition of Jullien will be plausible for Newcastle this summer, but it will not be without competition from elsewhere. Turkish giants Galatasaray have also been linked, but Southampton are understood to be the Magpies’ strongest competition for Jullien.

The Saints failed to replace Virgil van Dijk in the January transfer window and are believed to be keen on adding a new central defender this summer.
