With the kind of season Edinson Cavani has enjoyed this term, it is perhaps no surprise that he is among the most coveted players on the planet right now. Having arrived at Paris Saint-Germaine from Napoli back in 2013, Cavani has gone from strength to strength – and neutrals and pundits alike have been left watching in awe at some of the things he can do with a ball at his feet. His eye for goal, teamwork ethic and general presence on the pitch strike a mixture of fear and respect into opposing defenders, and so it is perhaps no surprise that he takes the gong for Ligue 1′s best striker in the 2017/18 season.
Cavani ended up with a huge 117 points – 13 more than nearest challenger Memphis Depay. Either player would, of course, be worth a look for any fantasy managers for next season’s squad, but Cavani just seems to represent a sound investment. His 12.5m valuation means he certainly isn’t the cheapest around, and perhaps isn’t even one of the biggest bargains going. However, if you have the spare change by the time you get to your front line, he is well worth consideration alongside the likes of much more expensive counterparts Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez. Even Neymar, Cavani’s team-mate since he arrived from Barcelona last summer, hasn’t been able to match to contribution offered by the Uruguayan, albeit the Brazilian has played fewer games.
Cavani made 32 league appearances for the French champions this season, with 30 of those being starts. It is impressive, then, that he managed to score 28 goals in those appearances, as well as providing six assists along the way. He has managed to bag plenty of braces, but surprisingly wasn’t able to manage a hattrick at any stage in the league. The fact that PSG won the Ligue 1 title so comfortably owes no small thanks to Cavani, but they will have to hope that he chooses to keep his heart in the French capital rather than be swooned by potential suitors, with west London seeming to be a strongly touted potential destination for next season.
Chelsea are believed to be looking for a replacement for Alvaro Morata, whose season tailed off so much that he was left out of the Spain squad for this summer’s World Cup. Cavani will be there with his native Uruguay, and should he have a good tournament the powers-that-be at Stamford Bridge may just find the temptation to make a move too irresistible to stave off.
