Behind the Rainbow: What it was like to play in KC’s original kits

You might’ve noticed Sporting Kansas City‘s players donning a vintage, rainbow look in pregame warmups before Sunday’s 0-0 draw against Columbus Crew SC.

On the club’s Retro Night 2018, the club paid homage to what was probably the most iconic kit theme of the the MLS 1.0 era, back when they were called the Kansas City Wizards (and yes, even the Kansas City Wiz in their first season).

“There were a lot of bad jerseys in the league — a lot of bad jerseys,” said current SKC assistant Kerry Zavagnin, who played for the Wizards from 2000-08. “But for all the bad looks, Kansas City for sure took the prize as the jersey you didn’t wanna be seen in.”
