Liverpool’s fine week concluded with defeat at Stamford Bridge as Jürgen Klopp’s side failed to clinch the point they needed to secure a berth in the UEFA Champions League group stage next season. Olivier Giroud made the difference for Chelsea, heading in from a Victor Moses cross after 32 minutes.

The Reds fielded a strong side in west London but were unable to respond, with Mohamed Salah remaining on 43 goals for the season as he aims to catch Ian Rush’s club record of 47. Third-placed Liverpool now lie three points clear of Chelsea, in fifth, but boast a vastly superior goal difference with one league fixture remaining.
