Everton vs. Southampton – Football Match Report – May 5, 2018

Tom Davies scored deep into added time as Everton salvaged a 1-1 draw against 10-man Southampton at Goodison Park, preventing their opponents from escaping the Premier League relegation zone.

In the 96th minute, Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand kept the ball in bounds, but Everton’s Idrissa Gueye collected it near midfield and sent it up to Davis at the top of the area. His shot went off the inside of Wesley Hoedt’s left leg and past a stunned goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

The draw reduced Southampton’s survival hopes, with a six-point game against relegation rivals Swansea City looming on Tuesday.

It also meant that West Bromwich Albion, who defeated visiting Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 earlier on Saturday, have temporarily warded off joining Stoke City in the Championship next season.

Nathan Redmond, a half-time substitute who had not scored in nearly a year, put the visitors ahead in the 56th minute when he headed home through Jordan Pickford’s legs from a cross by Cedric Soares.

Everton, unbeaten in their previous four games, had a chance in the 66th minute but the timing was off on Oumar Niasse’s cross to Cenk Tosun at the far post.

Redmond nearly added a second in the 82nd minute, but his attempt from just outside of the box vaulted over the crossbar, and in the 86th minute, when Pickford punched away his close-range attempt.

But Southampton were reduced to 10 men when Maya Yoshida was shown a straight red card for taking down Niasse in the 85th minute, and Everton challenged first in the 94th minute, when Leighton Baines’ free kick was punched over the crossbar by McCarthy, before Davies’ goal.

Sam Allardyce made two of his changes before the hour mark and his third was Davy Klaassen, the £23.5 million summer signing from Ajax who replaced Phil Jagielka for only his fifth league appearance and his first since March 10.

Southampton has still not won consecutive league games this season and also has not won at Goodison Park since their return to the Premier League in 2012-13.
