Young Espanyol fan scribbles out Lionel Messi’s name in homework

Espanyol captain Gerard Moreno has given a young fan two tickets for Saturday’s home game against Las Palmas after the girl crossed off Lionel Messi’s name in a grammar homework assignment and put his name instead.

The mother of the girl tweeted to Moreno a photograph of her daughter’s homework, which included the sentence: “My favourite football player is Messi (which she crossed out and added Moreno’s name next to it).”

She added: “Look Gerard Moreno, my daughter carries you in her soul!! She even changes her homework!!! “.

A five-time Ballon d’Or winner, Argentina captain Messi plays for Espanyol’s city rivals Barcelona and has no lack of supporters with 90.5million followers on Instagram.

Moreno tweeted back: “How great is your girl! I would love to see her at the stadium and that is why I want to give you two tickets for the game against Las Palmas.”

The 26-year-old forward has started in all 34 of Espanyol’s league games this season, scoring 14 goals, a career best in La Liga, to help the team remain on course to avoid relegation.

Moreno will be hoping his number one fan can bring luck to his side this weekend, with Espanyol’s top-flight status yet to be secured for next season.
