Bayern Munich doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt has launched a fresh attack on Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, accusing him of “neglecting the medical profession.”
Muller-Wohlfahrt left his role as Bayern’s doctor in 2015 after a disagreement with Guardiola, then Bayern’s coach, following a Champions League quarterfinal first-leg defeat in Porto.
The 75-year-old, who had been working at the club for 38 years, has since returned for a third spell at the Bundesliga club with manager Jupp Heynckes back in charge.
In his autobiography, Muller-Wohlfahrt revealed a number of disagreements with Guardiola before he left, and he has told ZDF that Guardiola thought he knew better about injuries.
“[Guardiola] completely neglected the medical profession,” Muller-Wohlfahrt said. “It was not about recovery of the players, but only freedom from pain. It was not about the healing of injuries. It was completely against my philosophy.
“He underestimated me and wanted to make an underling. He overestimated himself and thinks he knows better than anybody. That’s a tell for insecurity. I was too big for him. I had the backing of the club of the team, and wonderful status. Those things just happen. You can’t dream of them. You can’t reach them.
“He could not bear that I was the same as him, so I had to be trimmed and he used every opportunity to dupe me.”
Muller-Wohlfahrt, who previously claimed Guardiola has “low self-esteem,” also claimed the three-time Bundesliga-winning manager is lacking in self-confidence.
“I think Pep Guardiola is a person with a weak self-confidence who does everything to hide that from other people,” he wrote.
“Because of that, he seems to live in a constant fear. Not so much of defeats, but of the loss of power and authority.”
